Community Action Response Emergency Shelter
Lockport Cares, Inc. is a community-based group of approximately 20 area churches, various businesses, 15 service agencies and organizations developed to provide emergency shelter for those needy in Eastern Niagara County. Along with shelter, Lockport Cares, Inc. will provide necessary food and clothing for the residents. The shelter is set up as an emergent endeavor with the average stay limited to 10 days. The resident will be encouraged to find permanent housing within that time. Lockport Cares, Inc. will help direct them through referrals to other agencies and support services.
Lockport Cares, Inc. is run solely with volunteer staff and donations. All funding goes directly to the care of our clients' needs. A house is being donated and we hope to be operational by late fall 2008, "before the snow falls." We have much to do before then and when open, volunteers are needed in all capacities to help run the shelter. Funding is also needed. We are expecting approval of 501C3 application in the near future.
