Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who have so generously donated their time and energy!  The Lockport CARES emergency shelter's renovations are moving along at a steady pace.  Much has been done inside the home to meet certain building code requirements as well as make the home as comfortable as possible for our guests.  The work includes, but is not limited to: creating a handicapped bedroom and bathroom on the first floor; completely "gutting" the kitchen, upstairs bath and numerous other rooms; hardwood floors in the front hallway, dining room and living room have been completely refinished.  In addition many of the old shrubs have been removed to make way for the wheelchair ramp and the new back patio, which has already been poured.  Presently a new roof is being put on and most recently our good friends at Amherst Alarm have put in new "hardwired" smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detctors.

Ways to participate:
Help with renovations on the home.  Saturdays 9am-1pm (call 433-5252 for specific dates)
Volunteer to be a staff person once the shelter opens.  This is a non-profit 501(c)3 charity.  You can donate online by clicking the "Donate" icon or you can send a check made out to Lockport CARES at 160 Chestnut St., Lockport, NY 14094.
Donations of linens, towels and hygiene items are always needed.
PRAYERS.  Jesus Christ is the one who has guided this endeavor to this point.  It is because of His grace that we have come this far and it is through Him that we will carry forward what He has started.

Call or e-mail us for other ways to be involved.

Thank you for "being the hands of Christ."

A Press Conference was held on August 13 at 10:00 AM at the Lockport Cares, Inc. house on 192 Genessee St.  Senator Maziarz presented $5,000 in support from NY State, and Mayor Michael Tucker and Supervisor Marc Smith were in attendance.  Organizations, churches or other groups are being invited to "Adopt-a-Room" to help rehab our shelter house.

As of August 5, 2008, Lockport Cares, Inc. officially owns the house at 192 Genesee St. in Lockport which will be the home of our emergency shelter.  This will become a 12-15 bed emergency shelter with an approximate 10-day stay for guests.  We hope to open by Thanksgiving 2008.

Amherst Alarm has graciously DONATED the complete alarm system for the shelter.  We thank them for their generosity.

The McGowan Foundation has donated $28,000 to the shelter project.  This will go a long way to renovate our property to make it suitable as a shelter.
